Why do giraffes have spots? It's hard to imagine that such large animals need camouflage. But they do: from a distance, it makes them look like a big tree.
Despite the mottled camouflage of their fur, giraffes do not always escape the attention of their predators. But they know how to defend themselves with powerful blows from their front hooves. They usually do this only when they need to protect their young, as adult giraffes are rarely attacked. When one is lucky enough to observe them closely, female giraffes are not difficult to distinguish from males. They are somewhat smaller and their ossicles are fine and covered with small tufts of hair. Male giraffes have thicker, hairless ossicones at their
extremities.
