Polar bears and grizzly bears are the largest animal predators on the planet. Weighing over 500 kilos and nearly three meters long, this bear is twice the size of a Siberian tiger. Polar bears have a thick layer of fat to withstand the extreme cold of the Arctic. They also have an undercoat and a layer of transparent protective hair. As a result, they can swim and hunt in very low temperatures. Polar bears are very good swimmers and have even been seen up to 300 kilometres from the coast. When searching for food, the polar bear has an extremely sensitive sense of smell. They can smell a scent from a kilometre and a half away or be buried a metre under the snow! Their hearing and eyesight are comparable to those of a human. Polar bears are solitary, but they have no fixed territory and like to play with each other. Mating season is in May and during gestation, female polar bears almost triple their weight.
