The baby giraffes are raised with other young animals in a kind of kindergarten. One giraffe from the herd acts as a "teacher" and looks after the calves while the other mothers look for food. If predators approach, she sounds the alarm immediately. Then the giraffes stand in front of their babies and kick the attackers. At about four months of age, they begin to pick and eat the small leaves from the trees, but they still suck from their mother until they are nine months old.
